Cool Edit Pro was the predecessor of Adobe Audition. Syntrillium made "Cool Edit" ($69 in 2000) and "Cool Edit Pro" ($399 in 2000) with the former having fewer features (FAQ page). In May 2003, Syntrillium's technology assets were purchased by Adobe, who discontinued the non-pro version and renamed the pro version to Adobe Audition. 2.1 is the last version before it became Adobe Audition.

Release dates of Cool Edit Pro: (relevant because I need to check the system requirements page at that time for that version's requirements)

VersionRelease DateRequirement
2.12003/04/0898/ME/2000/XP
2.02002/01/1798/ME/2000/XP

1.21999/05/2595/98/NT
1.11998/04/1095/NT

Note that the website still said 1.2a even in 2002/04.

oldversion.com has a bunch of version numbers not listed above; those are actually the non-pro version.

Cool Edit 96 is a 16-bit application and works on Windows 3.1, despite that it's only officially stated to work on Windows 95 and NT.
